I could sit here and tell you of all the wondrous technological aspects that go into the design of the XCalibers. I could talk about Ballistic Integration Mechanics (BIM) — a computer design integration approach that is aerospace-based (with aspects of which were used in the mechanical and deployment design of the space shuttle and cruise missile systems). But I’m not going to do that.

And as important as it is, I could talk about Zone Stiffness Technology (ZST) which is also computer based that not only predicts all shaft specifications, (stiffness, torque, weight, outside diameters, etc.) but also how ALL those specifications are DISTRIBUTED along the entire length of a golf shaft — and goes well beyond saying a shaft has a “stiff tip”. This is truly the bottom line in golf shaft design. But I’m not going to do that either.

Both these technologies were used in the design of the XCalibers. They definitely formed the structural beginning and basis for the final designs. But there’s something a LOT simpler than high tech approaches and coined phrases (and BS) from the marketing mavens I’d like club makers and golfers alike to understand. It’s a little thing called...PLAYER TESTING.

Any structural design starts off with a concept. Once that concept is understood, preliminary designs are made and tested by players of ALL abilities. For Arthur Xtreme Engineering, that process can last 1-2 YEARS (as was the case with the XCaliber Tour SuperLites).

I start off with the best players in the world who obviously have repeatable swings and whose feedback is imperative in the final design of any world-class product (in any sport actually). This is done with something called “blind testing” in which all shafts are painted black and coded so no one knows what they are testing. After the design iterations have been narrowed down to one or two, my reps and I take the designs to the masses for their feedback and typically test against competitors’ shafts. Once this exhaustive program is finished and the data is tabulated, a final decision is made...or it’s back to the drawing board and the process is repeated until I’m satisfied I have a world-class, Tour-worthy product.

Pretty simple. No BS. No incredible marketing story. Again, just the TRUTH.

Yes I use some high tech tools.

Yes they have some fancy names.

But the bottom line is how do they play? Are they consistent in quality in all design specification aspects?

And can you believe in the product so much that you’d recommend it to a close friend?
